Alliance School of Law Events Report – Academic Year 2016-17

Alliance University’s vision is to be a world-class University that nurtures talent and catalytically transforms the lives of millions through excellence in teaching, research, service and community development. To uphold a commitment to shaping lives through scholarly teaching and learning, and that which contributes to an equitable and holistic transformation of society at large.

The Alliance School of Law offers graduate programs with an objective of preparing Law graduates with a sound understanding of the foundations of legal knowledge. The School offers B.A LL. B. (Hons.) and B.B.A LL. B. (Hons.) of five-year duration and undertakes consultancy projects. Equipped with excellent infrastructure including Moot Court, Fully Equipped library with variety of print and online resources aims to advancement and dissemination of knowledge of law and legal processes in the context of national development. The school in addition to its well experienced qualified law faculty members, invites regularly practicing lawyers and legal luminaries as adjunct faculty, guest faculty member to facilitate practical exposures on latest judgments.
As part of student development and academic activities, the following events were organised in the last academic year 2016-17:

  1. Inauguration of ADR Cell, Alliance School of Law: 14th February 2017

In order to maintain the quality standards of academic development and research consistent with the vision and mission statement of the University, Alternate Dispute Resolution Cell has been formed to provide quality education and training in respective professional fields.

  1. 4th Intra-School Moot Court Competition, Alliance School of Law: 14th March 2017

The 4th Intra-School moot court competition was held on 14th March 2017 wherein 70 teams had participated for the same. The competition was judged by practicing advocates and legal associates from the Karnataka High Court and Companies. The valedictory function for the Intra-Moot was held on 16th March 2017 wherein the Top 10 teams were felicitated with certificates and awards of merit.

  1. 2nd Alliance National Moot Court Competition: 18th-20th April 2017
    The 2nd Alliance National Moot Court Competition, the Pride and Soul of Alliance School of Law, Alliance University – Bengaluru was conducted from 18th to 20th April 2017. The event witnessed participants from all corners of India and the diversity of participants with the pan-India presence of the event ensured that bright and intellectual minds came forward for this legal extravaganza spread over three days. The event was flagged of on 18th April at Alliance School of Law, Alliance University Central Campus situated at Chikkahagade Cross, Chandapura-Anekal Road. The campus spread over lush 40 acres ensured a lively environment for the participants and dignitaries alike.

    Alliance School of Law, Alliance University is spearheaded under the exemplary guidance of Honorable Founder Chancellor, Madhukar G. Angur and the apt presence and support of Honorable Vice-Chancellor Dr. B. K. Ravindra who has guided the event from the inception. The program was organized by Faculty Convener – Assistant Professor Manish K. Salian, Student Convener – Gaurav Singh Gaur and Student Co-Convener – Aditya Venugopalan and students from Alliance School of Law, Alliance University.
    The Final Round of the moot court was graced by luminaries in the legal field comprising of:

    1. Honb’le (Retd.) Justice Dr. N. Kumar, High Court of Karnataka
    2. Shri. Udaya Holla, Senior Advocate – Former Advocate General of Karnataka
    3. Shri. Sudhakar Pai, Senior Advocate, High Court of Karnataka
    4. Shri. Joshua H Samuel, Principal Attorney, J Hudson Samuel & Partners

    Hon’ble Justice N. Kumar enlightened the august gathering on the Importance of Litigating while entering the legal profession. Students of law strive for the corporate field and the necessary knowledge for a transactional lawyer being derived from the initial years of practice as a litigator. Shri Udaya Holla addressed the gathering on the performance of the participating teams and mentioned of how the legal field has diversified from men to women and the growth of women in the legal profession.
    The title prizes were won by:

    1. Winning Team – School of Law, Christ University Bangalore
    2. Runners Up – VIT School of Law, VIT University Chennai
    3. Best Lady Advocate (In memory of Late Shakti Mishra, Student – Alliance School of Law) – Akanksha Ravi, VIT School of Law, VIT University Chennai
    4. Best Speaker (Final Rounds) – Akanksha Ravi, VIT School of Law, VIT University Chennai
    5. Best Speaker (Prelims) – Sushmitha Suresh, SDM Law College Mangalore
    6. Best Researcher – Priyanshu Singh, College of Legal Studies, UPES Dehradun
    7. Best Memorial – NUALS, Kochi
  2. The Secular Fanatic National Level Debate Competition: 13th May, 2017

Alliance University in association with the Hind Bharatiyam Foundation conducted the National Level Debate ” The Secular Fanatic: Dichotomies of The Indian Identity” on May 13th, 2017 at Alliance University, Central Campus, Anekal Bengaluru. The event was graced by the august presence of Mr. Salman Khurshid (former minister, External Affairs, Senior Advocate – Supreme Court) and Mrs. Louise Khurshid. The event was presided by Dr. Madhukar G Angur (Founder and Chancellor, Alliance University). The event included the presence of Dr. B. K . Ravindra (Vice Chancellor, Alliance University), Dr. K.S.Venkateshappa (Registrar, Alliance University), Dr. Sripad Markandey (Dean Academics, Alliance University) and other dignitaries.

Overall 8 Debaters participated from all over India, who were selected on merit. The Event was judged by Mr. Ian Faria (Founder and Master Trainer at Talk Temple), Dr. Ushy Mohan Das (CEO and Chief Coach, Dr Ushy’s Wisdom works), Dr. M. K. Ramesh (Professor of Law, NLSIU, Chair Professor (Urban Poor and the Law). The moderator for the event was Shri. Vineet Bhat (Advocate, High Court of Karnataka).

Mr. Salman Khurshid went on to enlighten young legal minds and the experienced about the need of the Topic in present day and their implementation in our lives. He further went ahead in expressing his academic views on various legal issues affecting modern-day society and appreciated Dr. Madhukar G Angur and his team for organising such an event which fits apt to the present arena.

  • The academic year 2016-17 witnessed high levels of participation by the students of Alliance School of Law in Intra as well as Inter-School competitions. This endeavour holds on to the vision and mission to uphold Alliance University and the School of Law as a world class institution.
